Father Brown Spin-Off Sister Boniface Mysteries Now Streaming

The 'brilliant' Father Brown spin-off, Sister Boniface Mysteries, hailed by viewers as a 'must see', is now available to stream. Fans of the British detective drama are eagerly awaiting a fifth series.

Series Overview

For the past four years, audiences have watched actress Lorna Watson portray Sister Boniface of St Vincent's Convent in Sister Boniface Mysteries, filmed at Princethorpe College in Warwickshire. The period detective drama, set in the 1960s, follows the life of the moped-riding nun who serves as a part-time scientific adviser to the local constabulary in the village of Great Slaughter.

The fourth series, which concluded last year, saw the convent threatened with sale to a property developer by Lord Sedgewick. While the show has been running since 2022, Sister Boniface first appeared on BBC's Father Brown in 2013, making a further guest appearance in 2024.

Viewer Praise

The 'cosy' drama has garnered considerable praise, with many viewers declaring it superior to Father Brown. One Reddit user remarked: 'I like Sister B and Father B as a balance to grittier shows.' Another added: 'I love the Show and all its weirdnesses. I just wanna know if there IS A SEASON 5.'

A further viewer wrote: 'I still like Sister Boniface, but I've given up completely on Father Brown. It's far too formulaic and just doesn't entertain any more.' Another shared: 'I wasn't sure if I wanted to watch this one. I watched Father Brown, which I liked, but am so tired of the detective being bungling and refusing help... I absolutely loved Sister Boniface. Polar opposite relationship from Father Brown shows. Hoping for a season 5 and beyond.'

One commenter remarked: 'I loved this character when she appeared in Father Brown so I was delighted to see this spin-off. It is a wonderful light, amusing British TV. Some of the dialogue makes you giggle.' While another enthusiastic fan noted: 'Five episodes in, and I'm liking this spin-off of Father Brown. They've given Sister Boniface credibility with a PhD and an official capacity as a consultant to the police. Where Father Brown is encumbered with a tiring and self-important (buffoonish) police inspector who resents and rejects input.'

Cast and Behind the Scenes

The cast also features Max Brown as DI Sam Gillespie, Jerry Iwu portraying DS Felix Livingstone, Miranda Raison as Ruth Penny, and Ami Metcalf as WPC Peggy Button.

Discussing her role with WhattoWatch, Lorna Watson said: 'I love the costume. You transform as soon as you put it on. It just changes the way you move, and it changes the way you listen because everything's a bit muffled under the wimple. You get used to it, but when you take it off at the end of the day, it's like hatching out of an egg. Suddenly, you can hear, and the world is different! I'm still getting rid of the tan line from the wimple. Even if you wear sun cream, you still get an embarrassing 'nun tan line' on your face! It's not the best, but my hair covers it, which is great.'

Sister Boniface Mysteries is now available to stream on U&Drama.
