ITV soap Emmerdale has released a new trailer that has left fans fearing for one of its most beloved villagers, Charity Dingle. The character, played by Emma Atkins, has been a staple of the show for 25 years, but her storyline is taking a dark turn.
Charity's Ongoing Ordeal
Charity is currently grappling with the aftermath of a sexual assault and blackmail at the hands of Dr. Todd, portrayed by Caroline Harker. While she reported the crime to the police, DS Reid (Angela Lonsdale) informed her that there wasn't enough evidence to charge the doctor, who has since left the village. The weight of this situation has taken a toll on Charity, and her family is growing increasingly concerned.
Chas Dingle (Lucy Pargeter) is only partially aware of what happened and has no idea that the surgeon assaulted her cousin as part of a blackmail scheme. To hide her trauma, Charity has tragically faked a serious mental condition. On Monday, June 15, news spread that she is suffering from postnatal depression after giving birth to baby Leyla. Manpreet Sharma (Rebecca Sarker) prescribed medication, but Charity feels utterly alone in her deception.
Spiraling Mental Health
Emmerdale spoilers confirm that Charity's mental health will spiral as she edges toward a breakdown. In worrying scenes next week, she speeds off in her car to avoid telling her husband, Mackenzie (Lawrence Robb), about her problems. She ends up standing on the edge of a lake. Mack fails to reach her and has no choice but to call the police.
As a vacant Charity stares into the distance, she hears rustling and a stranger appears, trying to help. When the stranger reaches for Charity, encouraging her to open up, she lashes out. Instead of running away, the mystery person suggests the reaction was due to being touched without permission. The question remains: Can Charity be saved?
Fan Reactions
A trailer released on Monday shows Charity in distress, with Mack heard saying, "Now Vanessa nearly lost her sister to post-natal depression." Charity is then seen screaming over her steering wheel while driving. Fans are now fearing that Charity may exit the soap in a devastating mental health storyline.
- One person commented: "Oh, Charity. I'm well nervous for next week's Emmerdale, hopefully Charity speaks to someone soon."
- A second added: "I have a feeling Charity is going to do something to herself, I mean when she got those sleeping pills off Manpreet, I really hope it doesn't go down that road."
- A third asked: "Does she drown?"
- Another wrote: "Oh no! someone has to help Charity!"
