EastEnders fans believe they've figured out Linda Carter's exit storyline following Kellie Bright's shock announcement that she's leaving the BBC soap. The actress, who has played Linda since 2013, will film her final scenes in the New Year, with her exit airing in a flashforward episode set on the first day of 2027.
A beloved character's journey
Kellie Bright became a fan favourite through her portrayal of Linda, who arrived on Albert Square as the new owner of the Queen Vic alongside her on-screen husband Mick Carter, played by Danny Dyer. Over the years, Linda has struggled with alcoholism, and in 2024 she decided to go sober after experiencing visions of her death if she continued drinking.
After selling the Queen Vic to Kat and Max Branning, Linda disappeared for several months last year on a cruise. On her return, she was shocked to find Max back in Walford, with whom she had an affair in 2021. Recent months have seen her dealing with Max, her former classmate Bea Pollard, and a fling with Grant Mitchell, and she has recently grown close to councillor Clive Masters.
The announcement and reaction
News of Kellie's departure broke over the weekend, leaving fans devastated. In a statement, Kellie said: "EastEnders has been my home for thirteen years and I have absolutely loved being part of the show, but I have decided that it is now the right time for me to say goodbye."
She added: "I made the tough decision over a year ago, and after discussing this with Kate Oates and Ben Wadey, they asked me to stay on to be part of an exciting storyline they had planned, and I happily agreed to extend my stay. I will miss my friends and colleagues hugely, but I am looking forward to my next chapter and spending more time with my wonderful boys."
Executive producer's promise
Ben Wadey, EastEnders Executive Producer, said: "Kellie has been at the beating heart of EastEnders for the past 13 years, and her characterisation of the fiercely lovable, protective, and brilliant Linda Carter has made her a favourite amongst the viewers and cemented her as a classic EastEnders icon."
He continued: "Kellie has been involved in some of the show's most explosive and iconic storylines, and everyone at EastEnders will miss Kellie and Linda dearly. When Kellie told us of her decision last year to leave, we already had big plans for Linda, so we were delighted that Kellie agreed to stay on to see them through. We've still got a long way to go before we say goodbye, but I can promise that Kellie's exit storyline will be full of unmissable drama."
Fan theories about Mick's return
Fans have taken to Reddit to share their predictions, with many suggesting Danny Dyer could return as Mick for Linda's exit. Linda has believed Mick died after being lost at sea on Christmas Day 2022, following a nasty trick by Janine Butcher, who is also set to return later this year.
One fan, @apprehensive-Cap2453, said: "With the news of Linda leaving the show, there's no way they don't bring Mick back and give them a happy ending, right?? Sure, we can talk about how unlikely it would be for him to have survived, but this is a soap opera. It's not exactly peak realism."
@Pow67 wrote: "Danny Dyer will surely come back even if it's just a flashback or as a ghost/hallucination. They have to share the screen one final time for sure as a send off to that era."
@thanks_akka posted: "I'm more and more convinced that Mick will be back briefly in some capacity for Linda's exit. Janine's own brief return is surely to do with her son."
@Mizfit1991 commented: "Linda will have doubts about moving forward with this relationship because of Janines meddling. Mick will appear in a dream or drunken hallucination, give her permission to move on and she'll walk away in a stronger position."
@CoiledBubble413 stated: "A return from him would be the only silver lining of this so i really hope so."
