Fans say they "fell in love with" Dove Cameron's 2018 Netflix film Dumplin' "on the first watch." The movie, which also features Jennifer Aniston and Danielle Macdonald, is currently streaming on Netflix.
A stacked cast and Dolly Parton's music
Cameron, 30, plays beauty pageant winner Bekah Colter in the film. The story centres on overweight teen Willowdean 'Dumplin'' Dickson (Macdonald) and her difficult relationship with her pageant-obsessed mother (Aniston).
Willowdean finds the confidence, with the help of Dolly Parton's music, to stage a protest against the pageants and unwittingly starts a revolution. Netflix's synopsis reads: "Dumplin' is the plus-size, teenage daughter of a former beauty queen, who signs up for her mom's pageant as a protest that escalates when other contestants follow her footsteps, revolutionizing the pageant and their small Texas town."
The late Dolly Parton wrote six original songs for the film with fellow musician Linda Perry. At the time of the film's launch, Parton shared: "When we got together to write a theme song, lordy, songs just kept coming out of us."
What fans are saying
At the time of writing, Dumplin' holds an 86 per cent critics score on review aggregate site Rotten Tomatoes, while audiences gave it 72 per cent.
"Fell in love with it on the first watch. One of my faves," one fan shared. "I enjoyed it. And while I already liked some Dolly Parton songs, it introduced me to more of them," said another.
A third added: "I think it was a good movie that has a really good and important message. I loved the book and they did a good job adapting it into a movie. I also really love Danielle Macdonald, I think she's a great actress." Another commented: "I enjoyed this film. It's cheesy and a bit cliched but the songs are fun, easy to hum along with and it's an easy, feel good watch."
