Douglas Henshall, best known for his role as Detective Inspector Jimmy Perez in the crime drama Shetland, has been completely transformed in first-look images from his new show, Forever Home.
The Scottish actor will play Robert Barrie in the six-part series, an adaptation of Graham Norton's novel. The story follows a second wife dealing with the memories of the woman who came before her.
A New Look for a Familiar Face
Images from the show reveal Henshall looking very different from his days on Shetland, where he appeared from 2013 to 2022. His co-stars include Amy Nuttall, Denise Welch, Lewis Cope, Jenny Walser, Kevin Whately, and Shane Zaza.
According to a synopsis, the plot revolves around Carol Crottie (Amy Nuttall) and her older partner Robert, whose dementia worsens. Carol begins to suspect that Robert's reluctance to leave their home is linked to the whereabouts of his first wife, Joan, who ran off with Robert's brother 20 years ago, leaving behind their two young children, Kaden (Lewis Cope) and Sally (Jenny Walser). As Robert's anxiety about the house's hidden basement grows, Carol and her mother investigate Joan's disappearance, uncovering secrets that will take time to untangle.
Graham Norton's Vision
The adaptation was commissioned earlier this year. Graham Norton commented, "In writing Forever Home, I was initially inspired by the simple idea of packing up a home later in life, and the 'what if' scenarios and complexities that come with later-life relationships. The novel soon evolved into a funny, twisted, 'dark-romp' full of farcical scenes and it's wonderful to see the depth and richness of Carol's story realised as a screenplay."
The series is co-produced by FilmNation Entertainment and The Mediapro Studio, with support from the North East Production Fund and North East Screen. Kirstie Macdonald, FilmNation TV UK creative director, said, "From the moment I read the always-hilarious Graham Norton's brilliant novel, I knew I wanted to bring Forever Home to the screen. It's a story full of twists and turns, secrets, and emotional depth that we can't wait to bring to life for 5 audiences."
