Danny Boyle's 28 Years Later has been named the best film of 2025 in a list compiled by UK critics, topping a year that also saw acclaimed works from Richard Linklater, Yorgos Lanthimos and Brady Corbet.
The sequel to 28 Days Later and 28 Weeks Later was praised for its visceral storytelling and Boyle's trademark kinetic direction, cementing his status as one of Britain's most innovative filmmakers.
The list, published by a leading UK newspaper, highlights a diverse range of films including Ethan Hawke's campy portrayal of lyricist Lorenz Hart in Linklater's Blue Moon, and Adrien Brody's Oscar-winning performance in The Brutalist.
Other notable entries include Emma Stone's turn in Yorgos Lanthimos' Bugonia, Daniel Craig's latest murder mystery Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery, and the documentary Marlee Matlin: Not Alone Anymore about the deaf actress and campaigner.
The critics also praised debut features such as Eva Victor's Sorry, Baby and Neo Sora's Happyend, as well as documentaries covering the Israel-Gaza conflict and the Sudanese revolution.
