Courtney Love has revealed she was close to death after falling ill during a visit to the United Kingdom in 2019. In a video shared on Instagram on Sunday, the singer said her body “almost exploded” after she was struck down with an undisclosed illness, and she spent time in hospital.
Singer recalls health scare
Love, 62, was speaking to followers about her upcoming record when she veered off topic to discuss the incident. “I went to England in 2019, and when I went there my body exploded, it just exploded, and I was in hospitals a lot and I almost died. I lost all my hair, and I was about 100 pounds, and they told me I was going to die. I didn’t believe them,” she said.
The singer attributed her scepticism to childhood experiences, saying she used to “pattern interrupt” adults who told her red was blue. She added, “when they told me I was going to die, I didn’t believe them, and somehow I got better, I’m healthy, which is amazing.”
Recovery and new music
In February 2020, Love, who has previously battled substance and alcohol abuse, confirmed she had been sober for 18 months, a period covering her hospitalisation in England.
Love also discussed her new album, admitting her previous solo release, America’s Sweetheart (2004), “flopped” commercially. She said, “I’m just tapping in, figuring how to roll this out. Things are great right now.”
Signing off, she added, “I just wasn’t being public about being sick, I don’t want to be public. I’m fine now. Thank you for waiting – just bear with me.”
