Coronation Street star Sydney Martin said she had the "best night of her life" as she and several of her castmates attended the UK's first non-replica production of High School Musical in Salford.
On Thursday, August 27, the show opened at the Lowry, where it will run until September 19 before transferring to the Troubadour Wembley Park Theatre from October 12, 2026, to January 3, 2027.
A global phenomenon returns
High School Musical became a global phenomenon 20 years ago when it first aired in 2006. It made breakout stars of Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens, who played the star-crossed lovers Troy and Gabriella, and spun two successful sequels.
Now, thanks to Manchester's Hope Mill Theatre and Chris Harper Productions in association with the Lowry, audiences can relive the hit Disney musical with the new show set on a basketball court inside the Lyric Theatre.
Star-studded cast and audience
Jason Donovan is taking on the role of Coach Bolton for the Lowry premiere run, before McFly star Harry Judd takes over for the London run. Disney icon KayCee Stroh will star in both venues as Ms Darbus.
Sydney, who plays Corrie's Betsy Swain, shared her reaction on Instagram, writing: "[five star emojis] from me. My CHILDHOOD. One of the best nights of my life!!!!" She also posted a photo of herself with a pal, saying: "Dress up as Troy & Gabriella!!!"

Also among the ITV soap stars enjoying the show were Jude Riordan and Bella Flanagan, who play Weatherfield's Sam Blakeman and Hope Dobbs. Posing with basketballs for a photo opportunity, Jude said after the show: "10/10 thanks for having us." Catherine Tyldesley also attended with her son, Alfie, and was seen posing for photos ahead of the opener.
Jason Donovan previously said about being part of the show: "High School Musical was such a massive part of my kids' early childhood. As a parent and as a musical fan the film was family entertainment at its best. Magical! Loved it." He added: "Popular culture has a cycle and I'm delighted to be joining this new reimagined High School Musical theatrical experience 20 years on from when I first discovered the film. Looking forward to seeing all in Salford."
