Judith Barsi, a child star who voiced Ducky in The Land Before Time, was killed by her father in 1988 at age 10, ending a promising Hollywood career that had begun just years earlier.
Rise to Stardom
Barsi started her career in adverts at age six, landing her first role as Kimberley McDonald in the true crime series Fatal Vision. More than 70 commercials followed before she was cast as Thea Brody in Jaws: The Revenge. She later voiced Ducky in The Land Before Time (1988) and Anne-Marie in All Dogs Go To Heaven (1989).
Still in the fourth grade, she earned £75,000 a year, equivalent to about £200,000 today. Despite her success, her home life was troubled. Her father, Jozsef, battled alcoholism and resented his daughter's achievements, threatening to kill his wife and Judith on multiple occasions.
Abuse and Missed Warnings
Jozsef was arrested three times for drink-driving and reportedly held a knife to Judith's throat before filming Jaws: The Revenge. In 1986, Maria reported the threats and physical violence to police, but no charges were filed due to lack of evidence.
Judith confided in friends about her father's violence, including throwing pots and pans at her, causing a nosebleed. She developed compulsive habits, pulling out her own eyelashes and her cat's whiskers. A child psychologist found evidence of physical and emotional abuse and reported it to child services, but the case was dropped after Maria said she planned to divorce Jozsef and move to Panorama City.
Final Days and Death
In the months before her death, Judith told friends: "I'm afraid to go home. My daddy is miserable. My daddy is drunk every day and I know he wants to kill my mother."
On July 28, 1988, Jozsef shot Maria in the hallway, then shot Judith in her bedroom as she slept. He doused their bodies in petrol and turned the gun on himself in the garage. Judith and her mother are buried at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Hollywood, with Judith's headstone inscribed "Yep, Yep, Yep," a line from All Dogs Go To Heaven.
