A recipe developer has taken the internet by storm with her indulgent twist on classic mashed potatoes, incorporating cheese, caramelised onions, and crispy onion rings. The dish, shared by TikTok creator Amy Sheppard, has amassed over 328,800 views and nearly 10,000 likes on the platform.
Sheppard's recipe elevates the humble mash by baking it with cheddar and caramelised onions, then topping it with onion rings for a nostalgic crunch. In her video, she said: 'I will never, ever get tired of the combination of creamy mash, cheddar cheese and caramelised onion... Only now, I'm putting cheesy onion rings on top, and it's the best thing ever.'
The preparation involves boiling potatoes until tender, frying onions in butter, and mashing the potatoes with butter and milk. The mash is then mixed with grated cheese, herbs, and the caramelised onions before being transferred to a baking dish. Onion rings are coated in oil, herbs, and cheese, then arranged on top and baked at 180°C for about 25 minutes until golden.
Viewers have responded enthusiastically, with one commenting: 'I am not using my free will to my best ability, this looks so good.' Another suggested adding bacon bits, while others praised the recipe's simplicity and flavour. Sheppard also noted that shop-bought mash can be used as a time-saver, and fresh spinach can be added if desired.
