Casualty's Melanie Hill and Neet Mohan have shared more details about the medical drama's 40th anniversary episodes, which air on Saturday, September 5. The instalments will focus on an explosion at St James' hospital, with Clinical Lead Flynn Byron (Olly Rix) across town helping those caught up in the chaos. It falls to Dylan Keogh (William Beck) to lead Holby ED as numerous patients from the site are admitted.
In the middle of the drama, Dylan faces a personal tragedy. As he tries to process what has happened, it is vital that he does not lose his cool. His entire team is relying on him.
'The stakes are a lot higher'
Melanie Hill, who plays Siobhan McKenzie, said: 'The stakes are a lot higher as well, obviously with the opening sort of five seconds, this massive apocalyptic thing happens. You've added another layer of stress onto them all. And the fact that, any minute, somebody could come into A&E, with a bag that could cause a massive tragedy.'
Confirming that the second episode is just as intense as the first, she added: 'It keeps ramping up and ramping up. I would like to mention the second episode as well, because there's so much to say about the first, and it's amazing, but come the second, you really think it cannot get any worse, and then you get taken out of the hospital – I think that is so clever – and into something else which involves three of the team.'
'The stress level on that is next level. Obviously that affects especially Dylan, but all the people who work at the hospital, their friends.'
Rash Masum's first shift as consultant
Neet Mohan's character Rash Masum became a qualified consultant in the previous boxset, meaning these episodes mark his first shift in his new role. Discussing how Rash feels now he has swapped the green scrubs for blue ones, Neet shared: 'I think there was a real relief about getting there. And then I think, given the circumstances, it's probably the worst shift he could've imagined.'
'I think we meet him at a point of, well, he struggled with his confidence a lot, and this couldn't be more of a pressure situation for him to step up and find it in himself to show more than anyone else that he deserves to be there.'
Reflecting on his reaction to the milestone episodes, he said: 'It just builds so much. And then what I loved about the scripts as well was that each character has such a defined through line for the two episodes, everybody goes on a journey.'
'When we were reading it, you're sometimes not sure how it'll translate on screen, but I think what's testament to what Steve [Hughes, the director] has done, and the team, is that each character goes on such a defined journey for these two episodes.'
'Like Mel says, the stakes just keep getting raised, and we keep putting that pressure on the team, and that's what I loved so much about what the end result is from reading the script.'
The Casualty 40th Anniversary special episodes will air on BBC One and BBC iPlayer on September 5th 2026.
