The story behind the spy swap
The story unfolds during the Cold War, as lawyer James B. Donovan is tasked with securing the release of Francis Gary Powers, a CIA pilot whose spy plane was brought down over Soviet territory. His freedom comes in exchange for Rudolf Abel, a convicted Soviet KGB spy held in American custody, whom Donovan had been appointed to represent at trial.
While Abel is convicted, Donovan persuades the judge to save him from execution, contending he could prove useful as a bargaining chip down the line. Donovan subsequently travels to a partitioned Berlin to broker Powers' release in return for an American economics student stranded in East Berlin, thereby escalating the diplomatic crisis. The film's title references the Glienicke Bridge, a renowned bridge linking Potsdam with Berlin, and the location where the prisoner swap occurred.
