Supporters of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in Brazil reacted after the first results of the presidential election were announced. The election is a tight race between Lula – the current president – and Flavio Bolsonaro.

In Madrid, Spain, a woman watched a television screen showing the prime minister, Pedro Sánchez, calling an early election for 29 November.

A sightseeing boat travelled along a duckweed-covered section of the River Lys in front of the Gravensteen castle in Ghent, Belgium. Prolonged hot weather during one of Europe’s driest summers on record has caused greater duckweed growth on the river.

In Bangkok, Thailand, rubbish piled up on the side of the road at Bangkapi market after floodwater receded. Heavy flooding across the city was triggered by persistent heavy rain, affecting about 329,000 households and 700,000 people and leaving four people dead, according to the department of disaster prevention and mitigation.

Johannes Vermeer’s Girl with a Pearl Earring was hung in the Mauritshuis in The Hague, Netherlands, after spending five weeks in Osaka, Japan, where it was part of an exhibition of works from the Mauritshuis.

In Paris, France, high school students staged a protest against education conditions. Up to 500 schools were partially or completely closed on Monday after recent clashes between riot police and protesters.
