James Bond fans are in for a treat tonight as Spectre, the 24th entry in the franchise, airs on ITV screens. The 2015 film, starring Daniel Craig in his fourth appearance as the MI6 agent, continues to win hearts despite receiving mixed reviews from critics.
Arriving in the wake of Skyfall, the 2012 box office phenomenon, anticipation among Bond enthusiasts had reached unprecedented heights. Spectre, directed once again by Sam Mendes, appeared to rise to the challenge, proving a commercial triumph with $880 million earned globally.
Fan Reactions and Critical Reception
Audiences remain split in their assessments of the film, but many have taken to Rotten Tomatoes to share their admiration. One viewer posted: "This is actually one of my favourite movies of all time. I know this is often looked at as one of the least great bond movies, but there's just something about it to me that I love. Well-done action, more serious tone, less dialogue... just so good all around."
Another fan shared: "Another Mendes masterpiece! This just keeps getting better. Bond is more exposed, more dramatic, and has a more sophisticated ambiance. Fast-paced, as always. Stellar cast all shine convincingly in character. Again, extremely intelligently written and executed."
Plot and Cast
The film tracks Bond as he operates outside official channels to investigate Spectre, a clandestine terrorist organisation connected to a ring he obtained from an assassin. Armed with fresh intelligence from Q and Moneypenny, he locates his old enemy Mr White, offering to safeguard his daughter in return for crucial information about the syndicate's head.
Bond exposes a worldwide criminal enterprise controlled by his adoptive foster brother Franz Oberhauser, who goes by the name Ernst Stavro Blofeld. He confronts this startling revelation while simultaneously battling a bureaucratic attempt to seize control of MI6 in London.
The cast features Christoph Waltz as Bond's adversary and the shadowy architect of Spectre, and Léa Seydoux as Bond girl Madeleine Swann. Appearing alongside them are Ben Whishaw, Naomie Harris, Dave Bautista, Monica Bellucci, and Ralph Fiennes.
Broadcast Details
One viewer offered their perspective on Craig's portrayal, saying: "A grand, stylish return to classic Bond swagger - shaken, not stirred. Critics Consensus: Spectre may not match the emotional resonance of Skyfall, but it delivers a lavish, thrilling adventure steeped in the franchise's most iconic traditions. Daniel Craig remains a commanding force as 007 - colder, sharper, and more self-aware than ever."
Spectre is scheduled to air on ITV at 9.35pm this evening, Saturday 22. Alternatively, it can be rented through both Amazon Prime and Apple TV.
