Ariana Grande has sent fans into a frenzy after changing the lyrics to one of her most iconic songs during her current residency at The O2 in London. The 33-year-old singer updated the line in Thank U, Next to reflect her rekindled relationship with boyfriend Ricky Alvarez, nearly a decade after they first dated between 2015 and 2016.
The original lyrics about Ricky read: "I wrote some songs about Ricky, now I listen and laugh." However, before coming to London, she sang: "Wrote some songs about Ricky, we always find our way back," while performing in Brooklyn, New York, on July 13.
Other lyric variations this year
This is not the first time Grande has altered the line. In Austin, Texas, on June 24, she sang: "Wrote some songs about Ricky, now they still kinda slap." Just two days later, she changed it again, singing: "Wrote some songs about Ricky, I know he still got my back."
London fans are now eager to see whether she will change the lyrics during her upcoming shows. One user commented on TikTok: "How healed she is." Another added: "I love you Ariana Grande." A third said: "I just LOVE how she speaks so good about her past."
Fans react to Mac Miller tribute
When singing lyrics about Mac Miller, whose real name was Malcolm McCormick and who died in 2018, Grande places her hand over her heart, prompting one user to say: "Sweet Mac, so missed."
The lyric change comes after she delayed the performance of her hit song Eternal Sunshine at The O2 to ask fans for a 20-second favour. Before starting the loop, she gently said: "I know this isn't the most convenient time to ask for quiet, but would you mind just letting me start this loop for the first 90 seconds of the song? And then I promise afterwards we can make noise."
Crowd noise request goes viral
In a viral clip, captioned "Ariana needs to start shushing the crowd like Lorde because what was that", viewers can hear fans shouting "Shut up" as others cheer and scream ahead of her performance. Commenting on the video, one user said: "People can go hours without screaming and cheering for no reason in public. 90 seconds isn't hard." Another added: "Why can't they just shut up?"
