Anne Hathaway's 'Mother Mary' Thriller Dubbed 'Black Swan Meets The Craft'
Anne Hathaway's 'Mother Mary' Thriller Trailer Drops

The first trailer for a highly anticipated new psychological thriller starring Anne Hathaway has sent fans into a frenzy, with many comparing it to a potent mix of Black Swan and The Craft.

A 'Psychosexual Pop Thriller' Arrives

Released on 2nd December 2025, the preview for Mother Mary introduces Hathaway as a struggling pop star attempting a dramatic reinvention. The film is written and directed by acclaimed filmmaker David Lowery, known for The Green Knight and A Ghost Story. Described as a 'psychosexual pop thriller', the narrative follows the singer as she enlists the help of her estranged fashion designer, Sam, played by Michaela Coel.

The stellar supporting cast includes Hunter Schafer, Kaia Gerber, and FKA Twigs. In a major coup for music fans, the project also boasts an original soundtrack written and produced by pop heavyweights Jack Antonoff, Charli XCX, and FKA Twigs.

Trailer Teases Fashion, Fear, and Séances

The trailer sets a tense, stylish tone. It opens with Coel's character, Sam, recalling that she hadn't seen the pop star in over a decade but knew she would return for a new dress. Their strained relationship is immediately apparent, with Sam deciding to craft her a so-called 'hate dress'.

The mood swiftly darkens from a fashion-focused drama to something far more sinister. Viewers are shown eerie séance scenes and a grisly image of a cut hand, suggesting Hathaway's character is grappling with the terrifying psychological and physical cost of her transformation.

Fan Reactions and Star Preparation

Social media reactions were swift and excited. One viewer declared it "the horror version of The Devil Wears Prada," while others emphasised the shift from "motivator fashion film to a psychological thriller." The comparisons to Darren Aronofsky's 2010 ballet horror Black Swan and the 1996 teen witch classic The Craft were a consistent theme, with one fan summarising it as looking "wild, like a blend of Perfect Blue, Black Swan and the Craft."

In a Vogue cover story earlier this year, Hathaway revealed the unique challenge of the role. She explained that she couldn't merely 'perform' the part but had to "become material David could craft with," embracing a beginner's mindset throughout the demanding shoot.

Mother Mary is scheduled for release in cinemas across the UK in Spring 2026.
