Oscar-winning actress Anne Hathaway has undergone a dramatic transformation into a commanding pop star for the first trailer of David Lowery's upcoming psychosexual pop thriller, 'Mother Mary'. The A24-produced film is scheduled for release in US cinemas in the spring of 2025.
Hathaway's Regal Pop Star Persona
In the titular role, the 43-year-old actress is seen commanding a packed stadium, channelling a glamorous yet troubled singer. The visual spectacle is heightened by a series of glittering leotards and gowns designed by Bina Daigeler. Hathaway's striking new look is completed with two-tone platinum locks, crafted by hair and make-up artist Heike Merker.
Adding authenticity to her performance, Hathaway performs original songs created by a powerhouse team of musicians: Jack Antonoff, Charli XCX, and FKA Twigs. The film's production was a lengthy process, finally wrapping on July 20, 2024 after a nine-month schedule that was extended due to the SAG-AFTRA strikes.
Plot Intrigue and Stellar Supporting Cast
The trailer hints at a tense and witchy narrative centred on Hathaway's character, Mother Mary. Following a decade-long estrangement, she seeks out her former friend, fashion designer Sam Anselm, played by Michaela Coel, to create a dress for a major comeback performance.
The dress-making process takes a dark, ritualistic turn when Sam offers to "cast out" an evil presence within Mother Mary to reinvent her. The trailer showcases enigmatic scenes, including six sets of women's hands forming a circle in a ritual, and a sapphic kiss planted on Mother Mary by a character portrayed by FKA Twigs.
The film's mysterious feminist ensemble also includes Hunter Schafer, Kaia Gerber, Jessica Brown Findlay, and Alba Baptista.
Fan Reaction and Hathaway's Packed Slate
Social media reaction to the trailer has been fervent. Instagram users have drawn comparisons to films like 'Black Swan' and 'Suspiria', with one user proclaiming, "2026 is gonna be Anne's biggest year ever." Another fan drew a playful parallel to the dynamic between 'Wicked' stars Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo.
Reflecting on the project, Hathaway herself called 'Mother Mary' "one of the most extraordinary, transformative experiences I have ever had." This role is just one of eight upcoming projects for the actress. Her busy schedule includes the highly anticipated 'The Princess Diaries 3' and 'The Devil Wears Prada' sequel.
Other confirmed films include the adaptation of Colleen Hoover's 'Verity' for Amazon Studios, and a starring role as Penelope in Christopher Nolan's big-budget adaptation of 'The Odyssey', which also features Zendaya and Matt Damon.
