FOX Sports holds the exclusive English-language broadcasting rights for all 104 World Cup fixtures in the United States, and has assembled a star-studded line-up. Lalas, a former USA player, has been joined by Ibrahimovic, Henry, and presenter Rebecca Lowe.
Lalas has already courted controversy by uttering expletives on air, but the most captivating storyline has been his uneasy exchanges with Ibrahimovic. Lalas was branded "ignorant" by Ibrahimovic during a discussion about the French national side, and their dynamic has taken another intriguing turn.
Ibrahimovic seemed thoroughly pleased that Lalas would be absent from the squad stationed at FOX's Los Angeles studio. Lalas journeyed to Seattle to link up with Rob Stone, Clint Dempsey, and Carli Lloyd for coverage of the USMNT's second World Cup fixture. That left Henry, Ibrahimovic, and Lowe in Los Angeles, with viewers being updated on Lalas' location. Lowe announced that Lalas had "left us," prompting Ibrahimovic to respond cheekily: "America, you're welcome."
Ibrahimovic's remark did nothing to dispel the notion that he has found it difficult to forge a rapport with Lalas on the broadcast. Prior to Lalas' departure for Seattle, footage emerged of Henry and Ibrahimovic juggling a football in the stadium while conspicuously ignoring the former USMNT star.
One of the most significant spats between Ibrahimovic and Lalas erupted on Tuesday following France's 3-1 victory over Senegal. In the aftermath, Lalas raised the question of whether the French side had been arrogant during the opening 45 minutes. This appeared to rankle Ibrahimovic, who has deep connections to French football having cemented his legendary status at Paris Saint-Germain. "It's not arrogance, it's confidence. Ignorant people will say it's arrogance, intelligent people it's confidence," Ibrahimovic fired back.
