Woman Defends 28-Year Age Gap Relationship

A couple with a 28-year age gap has defended their relationship against online critics, emphasizing that their connection and intimate life surpass generational differences.

Unexpected Love

After a previous age-gap relationship ended, Melanie Quinn from Bedfordshire swore off dating older men. However, meeting Shanks Putwain, 28 years her senior, changed her mind. The couple, aged 31 and 59, connected on Hinge and met in person after a month of chatting, feeling an instant spark.

Initially, Melanie worried about their appearance in public and the possibility of losing him sooner due to age. But after two years together, those concerns have faded, replaced by a unique mutual respect.

Bedroom Benefits

Discussing a surprising advantage, Melanie said: "Him being old means he takes his time and isn't rushed or freaked out. I've never really liked that sort of thing. And [goes in with] no expectations." She added, "Both of us don't really have a super high sex drive anyway, so it's great. I've never been respected like this."

Their bond extends beyond the bedroom. Both musicians, they let their romance blossom after their first date. Melanie recalled feeling butterflies when he suggested cuddling, and their second date at his home became more physical. "I think we both knew, then and there, that this was a lasting soul connection," she shared.

Family and Future Concerns

Despite their loving relationship, Melanie worries about possibly wanting children in the future, questioning if it would be unfair for a child to have an elderly father. For now, she focuses on being a stepmother to his 14-year-old son, who is indifferent to their relationship. "I get on well with his son," Melanie said. "He's at that age where everything is 'whatever' so I don't think he cares. He just wants his dad to be happy."

While friends and relatives have been supportive, strangers online have accused Shanks of 'grooming' Melanie. She strongly disagrees, noting they are both consenting adults. "We got together when I was 29, so that isn't the case," she said. "And he's the most relaxed person, no matter what. When people meet us, they get it, though."

Plans and Privacy

The duo, who have never argued, value their personal space and are saving to buy a property with separate bedrooms. They are also planning a wedding, as Shanks proposed eight months into their relationship to show his commitment.

Melanie prefers to keep their relationship private, given her previous 'concerning' age-gap relationship, but added, "You can have loving ones, like ours. We're perfectly aligned."
