Anika*, a 24-year-old marketing professional in London, traveled to Boston to spend what she knew would be a final week with her long-distance boyfriend, Leo*. Despite a week of passionate sex, she ended up crying at the airport and feeling lonelier than ever.
Meeting and Falling for Each Other
Anika met Leo on a holiday in Da Nang, Vietnam, while both were at university and traveling during their summer break. She describes him as 'kind and charismatic,' and their connection was immediate. 'It was a bit of a whirlwind, we felt like we had met our match,' she says.
Their sex life was passionate, with both open to trying new things. 'I felt very seen by him, he cared for what I liked and enjoyed making me orgasm. When we weren’t together, we sexted a lot as well,' Anika adds.
The Relationship Hits a Dead End
After four years of visiting each other between London and the US, plans to move in together fell through when Leo decided to stay in the US for university. 'He stopped talking about moving in together or making future plans all together. The vibe shifted. All future planning stopped and things had pretty much hit a dead end,' Anika explains.
This week, Anika traveled to Boston to see Leo, but with a heavy heart, knowing it would likely be goodbye.
A Week of Passion and Pain
Their days together were filled with intimacy, from showering together and making out in bars to having sex in various positions. On Wednesday, Anika noticed Leo's silence about future plans, confirming her fears. He was about to start medical school, and their plan to move in together in early 2027 no longer seemed realistic.
On Thursday, Anika brought up the future. Leo said he would have loved to move in together but was moving on. He suggested they could still meet and travel over the summer, but Anika felt this was a 'situationship' and told him it was over.
Emotional Goodbye
Despite the breakup, they continued to have sex, which left Anika confused. On Sunday, at the airport, they hugged for a long time and kissed one last time. Anika broke down in the airport toilet. Leo later said he cried in the car on the drive home.
Anika returned home feeling lonelier than ever. 'I went on this trip knowing it was a goodbye, hoping that spending one last week together would make the blow a little softer. But while sex can be passionate and powerful, it isn’t powerful enough to overcome all the emotions that come with saying goodbye to someone you love,' she said. She now needs to be alone for a while.
