Alicia Vikander and Michael Fassbender made a rare joint appearance at the Venice Film Festival on Sunday night, walking hand-in-hand along the red carpet for the premiere of Vikander's new film, The Echo Chamber. The notoriously private couple shared an unusually public display of affection, with Fassbender wrapping his arm around his wife before the pair kissed in front of photographers.
Vikander, 37, wore a pale blue Louis Vuitton gown featuring a strapless silk bustier, a dramatic ruffled skirt and a flowing train, while Fassbender, 49, opted for a double-breasted black tuxedo with a crisp white shirt and bow tie. The couple were joined on the red carpet by co-stars Susan Sarandon and Luca Marinelli, along with director Andrea Pallaoro.
The appearance came days after Vikander offered a rare insight into the couple's marriage. Speaking to Vanity Fair, the Oscar-winning actress said she does not believe love should involve constant drama. “If you choose to be with someone, there doesn't have to be drama,” she said, adding that with Fassbender, “it was like that from the beginning.” She has previously told Vogue that her privacy is not about being secretive, but about choosing what to keep private.
Vikander and Fassbender met in 2013 and fell in love while filming The Light Between Oceans in 2014, a film that later brought them to Venice for its world premiere in 2016. They married in an intimate ceremony in Ibiza in October 2017 and now live in Lisbon, Portugal. Vikander has spoken warmly of their quieter European lifestyle, telling The Guardian about swapping London pub Sundays for a beach club in February.
The couple have two children, born in 2021 and 2024, and have kept them firmly out of the public eye. Vikander has previously spoken about experiencing a miscarriage and fertility struggles before the birth of her first child, describing the journey as having “tough times during lockdown”. She also said she never formally announced her second pregnancy, adding: “I didn't make an announcement.”
