Uma Thurman, 55, has described her current stage of parenting as the 'sunset period' in a recent interview with The Times. The actress, who has been a mother for 26 years, is now co-parenting her three children: Maya Hawke, 26, Levon Hawke, 23, and Luna, 13.
Thurman shares Maya and Levon with ex-husband Ethan Hawke, 54, and co-parents Luna with French financier Arpad 'Arki' Busson. She noted that family life has slowed down, involving 'shopping and driving and emailing teachers and all the things we do.'
Reflecting on her own upbringing, Thurman recalled leaving boarding school at 15 to move to New York City alone. 'I knew very clearly that I was going to be an actress and I very much wanted to go out on my own,' she said. She described the freedom she was given as 'mind-boggling' and 'unimaginable' by today's standards.
Thurman's eldest daughter Maya is also an actress, known for roles in Stranger Things and the upcoming Hunger Games film. Thurman praised Maya's training at Juilliard and noted that she 'knows what she's doing.' She added, 'What I did learn [about mothering] is that nobody listens. So it's really about being there for them rather than telling them what to do.'
Thurman also revealed that Maya has free rein over her wardrobe, often borrowing pieces from the 1990s. 'There's very little left of it,' Thurman joked. As her youngest enters her teenage years, Thurman is embracing this new chapter, saying, 'It's beautiful and there's not that much time left in the day.'
