Tom Savini, the special effects makeup artist and actor known for horror classics like Dawn of the Dead and From Dusk Till Dawn, is reportedly 'devastated' after his family home in Pittsburgh's Bloomfield district was damaged by fire on Saturday 15 August.
Fire at the family home
The 79-year-old, who has worked in film for five decades, was raised in the house, which had belonged to his family for generations. Video from outside the property shows columns of dark smoke pouring out as firefighters worked to contain the blaze.
Safety and damage
Slasher Radio shared footage of the fire on X/Twitter, writing: "Special Effects Legend Tom Savini's home caught fire yesterday. Tom and his wife Jodii are safe. There was damage to the home and property, but the fire was controlled and put out before all was lost. Thoughts and prayers to the Savini family."
In the footage, two ladders are visible against the building's front as emergency crews work to extinguish the fire. Firefighters reportedly managed to douse the flames before complete destruction occurred.
Family legacy and documentary
The house was formerly owned by his grandfather, who handed it down to his father before it eventually became his. Portions of the 2015 documentary Smoke and Mirrors: The Story of Tom Savini were shot there.
The full scale of the devastation remains unknown, and it is uncertain whether any of his personal possessions were lost in the blaze.
