The finale of "Cape Fear" on Apple TV delivers a major revelation: Max Cady, played by Javier Bardem, was actually innocent of the murder for which he was imprisoned. Creator Nick Antosca has explained the shocking twist, which recontextualises the entire series.
In the closing episode, Anna Bowden discovers that Cady's sister Crystal, portrayed by Juliette Lewis, committed the murder for which Max was convicted. Crystal killed Max's pregnant wife and took her unborn child, who survived and grew into adulthood. In a bitter irony, Max inadvertently killed his own son during the chaos at the family boat earlier in the episode. This proof that Max began his legal journey as an innocent man comes as he is ultimately defeated by the Bowdens.
Despite Anna's declaration of "Let him die in a cage," Max's fate is sealed but the family's peace is not. The series jumps to a backyard barbecue that mirrors the opening scene, yet only the four family members are present, surrounded by an unsettling silence. Tom glances nervously at the pool where he nearly died, and Anna's composure cracks as she echoes the word "guilty," before the screen cuts to a stark red filter.
Antosca told Variety that the ending was designed to capture the lingering trauma, referencing the 1991 film's narration about never speaking of the events again. He noted that the family will always be haunted, and hinted at legal troubles: Anna wears an ankle bracelet and the couple may not be allowed to practise law in Georgia. "They're probably going to have to sell that house," he said, as the family tries to recreate a safe past that no longer exists.
