Taylor Swift's former teacher and close friend Kirk Schwabe passed away on Friday at the age of 69 after a battle with renal cancer, on the same day she married Kansas City Chiefs star Travis Kelce in a private ceremony at New York City's Madison Square Garden.
A Bond Beyond the Classroom
Schwabe taught Swift criminal justice at Henderson High School in Nashville, Tennessee, from 2004 to 2006. As her career took off, he was hired by her family to work as one of her security guards, a role he held for years. The pop star, now 36, honored him by naming her character's teacher 'Mr. Schwabe' in the 2010 romantic comedy Valentine's Day.
In a recent interview with The Telegraph, Schwabe recalled recognizing Swift's potential early on. 'I once told her: 'You're a superstar. This is not fun and games no more. You are it, everything keeps going up and up and up, and the sky's the limit for you,'' he said. He also expressed confidence in her choice of husband, stating, 'I do trust Taylor's judgment. She knows what's best.'
A Legacy of Care
Schwabe's wife, Jane, previously said he treated Swift 'like he did his daughters.' His daughter Sarah added, 'My dad had a remarkable way of making people feel seen, valued and protected. Whether you were family, one of his students or someone like Taylor whose path crossed his, he cared deeply about people. That's the legacy he leaves behind.'
A Fairytale Wedding
Swift and Kelce exchanged vows on Friday at Madison Square Garden, transformed into an enchanting setting with real trees and blooming flowers for 1,000 guests. Insiders described the atmosphere as 'Alice in Wonderland meets Wizard of Oz.' The couple announced the news at 7:30 p.m. with billboards outside the venue reading 'JUST&T MARRIED!'—a play on their initials.
