Former Casualty star Sunetra Sarker has opened up about the death of her ex-husband, Nick Corfield, who passed away two years ago at the age of 53. The actress, now 53, revealed the news during an appearance on Gabby Logan's The Mid Point podcast, sharing that Nick's death had remained private until now.
Devastating Loss for Family
Sunetra, who was married to Nick from 2003 to 2013, said the loss was a "really big, massive bombshell" for their son Noah, who was born in 2001. "We had really sad news two years ago of Noah's dad passing away," she explained. "He was very young. I don't even think I've still processed Nick's passing but we then focused a lot on Noah."
Helping Son Cope with Grief
The Loose Women star admitted she has spent the last two years helping Noah, now a university student, navigate life without his father. Sunetra, who also starred in Brookside, revealed that her current husband, Scott Carey, whom she married in 2018, has been a crucial support. "We focused a lot on Noah having this new dynamic because he gets on amazingly with Scott and always has," she said. "But he is his stepdad and he's always seen him as that. Now, all of a sudden, there was this big gap where there was no dad role for Noah anymore."
Stepdad's Thoughtful Role
Sunetra praised Scott for his sensitivity, saying he has made their home a place of memory for Nick. "He's made our home very much a memory to all the things that Nick may have done and made sure we've got pictures. He's just been really mindful – he plays darts with him all the time." She added, "He just does a lot of things that don't even come past my mind because I'm focusing maybe more on the emotional stuff."
Keeping Nick's Memory Alive
Sunetra frequently talks about Nick to help Noah remember him and finds comfort in doing so herself. "I think he's worried about forgetting his dad and so I keep him very present. I talk as if he's still here," she told the presenter. "I say, 'Well, me and dad will be really… well, what me and dad would want is this.' I think I'm doing it to try and pretend to myself he's also still here."
Sunetra, known for her role as Dr Zoe Hannah in Casualty from 2007 to 2016, did not disclose the cause of Nick's death. The family continues to adjust to life without him, supported by their close bond.
