Selena Gomez has spoken out about the 'hurtful' criticism she has received from fans over her relationship with music producer Benny Blanco, describing him as the 'best thing' that has ever happened to her. In a wide-ranging interview with Time magazine, the singer and actress opened up about the intense fan reaction to her romance, which she confirmed in December 2023.
Gomez said: 'I know what people can do to people I love. My own fans, who I adore and feel like have shaped who I am, will say the most hurtful things to me about how I live my life.' She noted that Blanco has the strength to ignore the noise, adding: 'I just cherish every moment with him.'
The Only Murders in the Building star also responded to Blanco's recent comments on The Howard Stern Show, in which he expressed his desire to start a family with her. Gomez laughed off the declaration, saying he 'can't lie to save his life'. She insisted that a partner is not her only source of happiness, revealing that she had been alone for five years and had planned to adopt a child by age 35 if she remained single.
Gomez, who had a highly publicised on-off relationship with Justin Bieber between 2010 and 2018, also offered advice on coping with heartbreak, stating that one must 'go through it' and allow oneself to have difficult days.
The couple first sparked romance speculation in July 2023 following their collaboration on the single 'Single Soon'. They confirmed their relationship in December, when Gomez commented 'Facts' on a social media post. The announcement drew backlash, with some fans calling Blanco 'unworthy'. Responding to critics at the time, Gomez wrote: 'He has treated me better than any human being on this planet. He is my absolute everything in my heart.'
