Jamie Vowles-Wang has reflected on his experience on The Piano after progressing to the grand final of season four of the Channel 4 show. The programme, hosted by Claudia Winkleman, showcases Britain's best amateur pianists.
Jamie impressed in the first stage with his improvisational skills at Manchester Piccadilly station. His ear for music saw him reach the final at Birmingham Symphony Hall. The episode aired last night as Grace Matthews was crowned winner after her emotional performance.
Tribute to fellow finalists
Jamie took to Instagram to pay tribute to his fellow finalists. He said: "What just happened?! So, we just had the final episode airing, which marks the end of our journey on The Piano S4, but not necessarily the last of what you’ll see of us six. I wanna start by just saying how absolutely unique, diverse and absolutely full of love these five other gifted contestants are. I’ve never been more entertained and impressed by another group of people ever before."
He praised Grace, William, Gaby, Sophie and Harri individually, noting Grace's performance of Einaudi as the best he had ever heard. He also described meeting mentor MIKA as "an absolute life-changer" and an inspiration since early on.
Journey to the show
Jamie grew up in Anfield and now lives in West Derby. He told the ECHO earlier this month that it was his nan's idea for him to apply. He said: "My grandma loves the show and she told me I should give it a shot. So I auditioned. I didn't get in at first. There was one final spot because someone left and they let me go to Manchester Piccadilly for that episode."
His love of the piano began when his mum signed him up for classical music lessons at age 10. His ability to improvise and play popular songs by ear has made him a viral hit on social media, with more than 300,000 followers on TikTok and Instagram.
Representing Liverpool
Jamie acknowledged the difference between TV and social media: "It's a completely different realm to social media because when it's on TV everyone is watching it and paying attention. With social media, you're scrolling, you maybe give it a like but then you're done. It's a bit more disposable."
He follows fellow Scouser Brad Kella, season two winner from Fazakerley, as a pianist representing Merseyside on the show. Jamie said Brad "was my favourite act on the entire show. He brought me to tears so being on the same show as him [is an honour]."
Jamie credits growing up in Liverpool with giving him his innate ability to understand music: "There's music all around Liverpool and you can't escape it. For any musician in Liverpool, there's definitely something about the city that fuels your soul."
