Viewers have praised the BBC's first-ever high-end Gaelic drama, An t-Eilean, as 'absolutely brilliant' and 'addictive'. The four-part crime thriller, set in the Outer Hebrides, is available to watch for free on BBC iPlayer.
Plot and Cast
The series follows Detective Sergeant Kat Crichton, played by Sorcha Groundsell, who is sent back to the Western Isles to investigate the murder of millionaire Sir Douglas Maclean's wife. Sorcha, fluent in both English and Gaelic, has previously starred in Shetland, His Dark Materials and The Innocents.
Kat is ordered by DCI Ahmed Halim, played by Sagar Radia, to investigate the case on the islands of Lewis and Harris. Returning home is complicated for Kat, who mysteriously left the Western Isles a decade earlier. Her undisclosed connection to Douglas gives her insight into the family's dynamics but also puts her in a dangerous position.
Viewer and Critic Reception
Described by the BBC as a 'tense, twisting story of lies, loss and long-buried secrets', the series has been commissioned for a second season. It won the drama and entertainment prize at Prix Circom 2025, and The Guardian awarded it three stars, saying: 'This Gaelic language crime drama should have happened years ago.'
Viewers have also shared praise online. One wrote: 'Absolutely brilliant viewing - an easy 10 from me.' Another said: 'The alternating use of English and Gaelic can be tricky at first, but once you settle into reading the subtitles, it feels completely natural.
