Channel 5 has announced that Phillip Schofield will return to television in a new three-part series, prompting a mixed reaction from viewers. The former This Morning host will appear in "Phillip Schofield Cast Away", his first television appearance in more than 12 months.
The series, airing across three nights from Monday 30 September to Wednesday 2 October, follows Schofield as he is cast away for ten days and nine nights on a remote, unpopulated island off the coast of Madagascar. He will document his own experience with only a handful of cameras, while the production team remains stationed 30 minutes offshore, intervening only in an extreme emergency.
In a trailer for the programme, Schofield says: "It is my chance to tell my side of the story. I know what I did was unwise, but is it enough to absolutely destroy someone?" The synopsis describes the experience as an opportunity for him to confront total isolation and the forces of nature, while exploring his own controversial story.
Channel 5 commissioning editor Guy Davies said the series is "not just a survival challenge" but a chance for Schofield to look back over the last 18 months of his life. He added that viewers will see him "unguarded, emotional and brutally honest".
However, the announcement has sparked a strong reaction online. Some social media users have said they will not watch, with one writing on X: "Shame on Channel 5 giving Phillip Schofield a route back onto British TV." Others have defended him, with one person commenting: "Give Phillip Schofield another chance. A woman would be given another chance, why not a man?"
