Savannah Guthrie, the esteemed anchor of NBC's flagship morning programme "Today," has publicly described her mother Nancy as a woman of profound faith and an unwavering source of strength for their family. For over a decade, viewers have become familiar with Nancy Guthrie through occasional, heartfelt appearances on the show.
A Mother Celebrated for Her Character
Over the years, Savannah Guthrie has painted a vivid portrait of her mother's character, consistently highlighting her selflessness, loyalty, and adventurous spirit. In a poignant tribute on her mother's 80th birthday four years ago, Savannah beamed as she spoke of a life lived with integrity.
"She's a truth teller, whether you really want to hear the truth or not," Guthrie said, calling her mom an enduring inspiration and a woman of great faith. This sentiment was echoed by Savannah's older sister, Annie, who nearly a decade ago on "Today" credited their mother with creating a unique and amazing foundation for the family.
A Family Forged Through Adversity
The Guthrie family's bond was profoundly tested and strengthened following a tragic loss. Savannah Guthrie has often shared how her mother held the family together after the sudden death of her father from a heart attack at age 49, when Savannah was just 16.
"When my dad died, our family just hung onto each other for dear life because it was such a shock," she recalled during a 2017 segment on "Today." "We were just trying to figure out how to become a family of four when we'd always been a family of five."
She described her father as a man with a big personality and unshakeable integrity. In the wake of his passing, both daughters chose to live at home during their college years, ensuring their mother was never alone on weekends. Savannah has said her mother met this unthinkable challenge "with grit, without self-pity, with determination and always, always with unshakeable faith."
An Urgent Appeal for Help
The situation took a distressing turn on Tuesday, when Savannah Guthrie asked for prayers to help locate her 84-year-old mother. Authorities believe Nancy Guthrie was taken against her will over the weekend from the Tucson, Arizona, home where she lives alone.
According to a person familiar with the investigation who spoke to the Associated Press on condition of anonymity, authorities do not believe the abduction was part of a robbery or a kidnapping-for-ransom plot. The person was not authorised to publicly discuss the details of the ongoing case.
Shockwaves Through the Today Show
Nancy Guthrie's disappearance has sent shockwaves through the "Today" show studio, where she is a beloved figure. She has participated in cooking demonstrations and made surprise visits to the set to see her daughter.
"For all of us who've gotten to know her and love her, it is personal," an emotional Jenna Bush Hager, a co-host of the show, said during Tuesday's broadcast. Savannah Guthrie was notably absent from the anchor's desk that day as the search continued.
The family and authorities continue their urgent efforts, relying on the same faith and resilience that Savannah Guthrie has long credited to her missing mother.
