Sarah Parish Opens Up on Career and Personal Tragedy in TV Appearance
Actress Sarah Parish will be a guest on the upcoming episode of Love Your Weekend with Alan Titchmarsh, airing this Sunday. The 57-year-old star joins host Alan Titchmarsh, 76, and singer Peter Andre in the ITV studio for the programme.
A Diverse and Successful Acting Career
Sarah Parish began her acting journey in 1993 and has since built an impressive portfolio across film and television. Her notable film appearances include romantic comedies such as The Wedding Date and The Holiday. On television, she has featured in numerous popular series including Peak Practice, Broadchurch, Cutting It, Mistresses, Merlin, Monroe, Atlantis, W1A, Trollied, Bancroft, Industry, and Stay Close.
Marriage to Actor James Murray
Sarah Parish has been married to fellow actor James Murray since 2007. James, 51, is known for his roles in television series such as Primeval, Defiance, Cutting It, Cucumber, McDonald & Dodds, The Crown, and Masters of the Air. The couple have navigated both professional success and personal challenges together.
Tragic Loss and Charitable Response
In January 2009, Sarah and James experienced profound personal tragedy when they lost their eight-month-old daughter, Ella-Jayne, to congenital heart failure. Ella-Jayne was born with Rubinstein-Taybi Syndrome, a rare genetic disorder. This devastating event prompted the couple to channel their grief into positive action.
Five years later, in 2014, they founded The Murray Parish Trust, a children's charity dedicated to supporting seriously ill children. To date, the trust has raised over £5 million for Southampton Children's Hospital, where Ella-Jayne spent much of her short life. The charity aims to reach every seriously ill child in the UK by 2035, providing services such as drama classes, yoga, music workshops, and comforting spaces in paediatric units for parents.
Balancing Acting and Charity Work
Over the past decade, Sarah Parish has juggled her acting career with running the charity, describing the latter as a "grounding" reality that contrasts with the unpredictable nature of acting. The couple, who also have a 16-year-old daughter named Nell, both received MBEs in recognition of their charitable efforts.
In a recent interview with the Sunday Times, Sarah reflected on their journey, acknowledging the immense grief they faced. She stated, "I'd been very lucky in life. Jim and I were rolling along, having a lovely time. Moved out to the country to start a family. Ticked every box, as they say. We were both working, both leading shows. And then suddenly something puts a spanner in the works and it's quite unbelievable."
She added, "But in hindsight, everything happens for a reason and it's often those terrible, terrible things that lead you in the direction that you were always supposed to go. I think if Jim and I had just carried on… I don't know if we'd still be… I don't… We would just be very different people. Maybe not as patient, maybe not as nice."
