Sam Neill's Birth Name Revealed
While fans knew him as Sam Neill, his birth name was Nigel Neill. He revealed this on The Kelly Clarkson Show in 2024, saying it was 'embarrassing'. He explained: 'I was christened Nigel Neill — that's like my parents giving me a disadvantage from the start.' Neill said he changed his name at age 10 because 'you'd never want to be called a Nigel, it's also called Nigel No Mates.' He and his best friend, Nigel Nut, adopted nicknames from Westerns: Sam and Bill. 'That was the best decision I ever made,' Neill said.
Career Highlights
Neill made his debut in My Brilliant Career and went on to star in Omen III: The Final Conflict, Possession, and In the Mouth of Madness. He played second in command to Sean Connery in The Hunt for Red October, Holly Hunter's husband in The Piano, and a scientist in Event Horizon. His iconic role as Dr. Alan Grant in Jurassic Park cemented his place in cinema history.
Health Battle
In 2022, Neill was diagnosed with stage 3 angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma, a rare non-Hodgkin lymphoma. He took a break from acting and announced he was cancer-free earlier in 2026. His family noted that his death was not related to cancer.
