Rupert Grint Opens Up About the Difficult Realities of First-Time Fatherhood
Harry Potter star Rupert Grint has spoken with striking honesty about his experience of becoming a father for the first time, describing the period as "quite traumatising" and "isolating". The actor, famed for his role as Ron Weasley, shares two children with his partner, fellow actor Georgia Groome.
Personal Struggles Mirror New Film Role
Grint's latest project sees him portraying a new father in the film Nightborn, directed by Finnish filmmaker Hanna Bergholm. The movie blends folklore with a deep exploration of postpartum depression, themes that resonated powerfully with Grint's own journey into parenthood.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the 37-year-old actor reflected on the birth of his first child, daughter Wednesday, in May 2020. "It really taps into being a parent," Grint explained. "The fear of the dangers and the baby getting hurt – something being not quite normal. I definitely had it with Wednesday."
He elaborated on the emotional toll, stating, "Those first few months can be quite isolating. It's a terrible feeling when it should be the most amazing thing, but it can be quite traumatising."
A Shift in Focus Towards Family Life
Both Grint and Groome experienced early fame—he as a global Harry Potter icon, and she as the lead in the cult teen comedy Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging. As adults, they have consciously stepped back from the limelight to prioritise their family.
While Grint has taken roles in projects like the Apple TV+ series Servant and M. Night Shyamalan's film Knock at the Cabin, Nightborn marks his first lead role in several years. During this period, his focus has firmly been on parenthood.
Speaking about the transformative love he discovered upon becoming a father in 2021, Grint said, "It was something I never really had much of an idea of, that kind of love. It's a very different love. It's very strange. It definitely has kind of changed my perspective on things but also in a helpful way."
Welcoming a Second Child and Future Career Plans
In April of last year, Grint announced the arrival of their second child with a characteristically witty social media post. "'Secret Child Slightly Revealed,'" he joked. "Introducing Goldie G. Grint. A 10/10 baby (so far)."
Regarding his acting career, Grint has expressed a desire to maintain a steady but measured pace, aiming to work on "one thing every year". His return in Nightborn, however, comes with a warning for devoted Harry Potter fans.
In an interview with Variety, Grint cautioned that audiences expecting a character similar to the warm-hearted Ron Weasley are in for a significant surprise. "It does go against the warmth of Ron," he stated, hinting at a darker and more complex portrayal in his new film.
Through his candid revelations, Rupert Grint sheds light on the often unspoken challenges of early parenthood, balancing his personal experiences with his professional resurgence in a role that deeply reflects his own life journey.
