Rose Reilly Backs Tartan Army's Passion at World Cup

Scotland's only World Cup winner, Rose Reilly, has backed the Tartan Army to bring passion and joy to the tournament after a 28-year absence. The 71-year-old, named the world's best female footballer in 1984 after helping Italy win the Mundialito Femminile, the Women's World Cup of the era, expressed her excitement about the unity and spirit of Scottish fans.

Rose Reilly's Praise for the Tartan Army

Rose Reilly said: "Sport creates camaraderie, and I think it's fantastic to see everyone come together. To see all the flags and the kids getting into it. People feel part of a family. The Tartan Army are known worldwide for being good fun."

She added: "I always say the Brazilian fans are great at a World Cup with all the samba and colour they bring. Argentina and the South Americans are great too because they bring their folklore and traditions. But Scotland fans bring the passion. We're known for our unwavering dedication and joy. We all come together. It's for everybody and it's absolutely amazing to see and be part of. I just love it. It really is – no Scotland, no party."

Rose Reilly's Remarkable Career

Born in Stewarton, Ayrshire, Rose was forced to leave Scotland at just 17 to pursue a professional career abroad due to the lack of opportunities for women in the game. The former striker became a star in Italy's Serie A and was eventually invited to play for the Italian national team. Having already earned 10 caps for Scotland, Rose went on to make 22 appearances for Italy after signing for AC Milan.

She began her football career at the age of seven with local boys' side Stewarton United. To be allowed to play, she had to cut her hair short and use the name "Ross" because women's football was effectively barred when she was growing up.

Rose won eight Serie A titles and four Italian Cups and was awarded the Golden Boot in 1978 after scoring 43 goals for Catania and again in 1981 after netting 45 times for Lecce.

Support for Scotland and Argentina

While she will support Scotland, Rose admits she will also have a soft spot for Argentina when the tournament begins in honour of her late husband Roberto.
