Rob Rinder Examines Unsolved Lucy Hargreaves Murder in New Docuseries
Rob Rinder Revisits Unsolved Lucy Hargreaves Murder Case

A harrowing new documentary series revisits the unsolved murder of a young mother that shocked the nation. Rob Rinder: The Crime I Can't Forget is now streaming on the Crime+Investigation platform, with TV personality and former criminal defence barrister Rob Rinder delving into the chilling case.

The Case That Haunted a Nation

Lucy Hargreaves, a 22-year-old mother of three, was killed in August 2005 while sleeping on her sofa at her Liverpool home. Three masked intruders stormed in, shot her three times with a sawn-off shotgun, doused her duvet with petrol, and set the house alight before escaping. The murder remains one of Merseyside's most notorious unsolved cases. Despite 21 arrests, no one has ever been prosecuted.

Rob Rinder's Personal Connection

Rob Rinder, known for his role on TV's Judge Rinder, served on the defence team during the original trial. At the conclusion of the prosecution's case, the trial judge accepted a submission that insufficient evidence existed for a jury to convict. The defendants were formally cleared, leaving the killing unresolved.

Twenty years on, Rinder returns to Liverpool to meet those who knew Lucy and speak with her relatives. The docuseries sees him reuniting with former lead defence counsel Rod Johnson KC to examine the legal arguments that led to the case being halted. As Rinder grapples with the lasting emotional burden, the film poses a thoughtful question: could advances in legislation, such as trials in absence, provide a path to renewed examination of the evidence?

Rinder's Reflections

Speaking of the attack that shocked the nation, Rinder said: "This is a case that has remained with me for two decades. Returning to it, to the people, the evidence, and the questions that endure, has been both challenging and deeply moving. I remain profoundly grateful to Lucy's family for the trust they have placed in me and the team in telling her story. While the legal process reached its conclusion at the time, the human impact of what happened continues to resonate. I hope this film contributes, in some way, to a fuller understanding of that impact."

Episode One of Rob Rinder: The Crime I Can't Forget is streaming now on the Crime+Investigation streaming platform. A second episode will air next Monday, June 15, at 9pm on Crime+Investigation.
