Disgraced Presenters Richard Keys and Andy Gray Set for UK Return After beIN Sports Departure
Former Sky Sports presenter Richard Keys is reportedly planning a permanent return to the United Kingdom when he concludes his television role at beIN Sports this summer. Keys, who has resided in Qatar for thirteen years while working as a lead presenter for the sports network, has been informed that his contract will not be renewed upon its expiration at the end of the current football season.
Broadcasting Duo's Joint Exit and Personal Plans
Andy Gray, Keys' long-term broadcasting partner and close personal friend, will also depart beIN Sports simultaneously and is similarly expected to return to Britain. According to reports from The Telegraph, the 68-year-old Keys intends to move in permanently with his 37-year-old wife, Lucie Rose. The couple entered into a secret marriage during a private £20,000 ceremony in Devon in June 2023 and have maintained a long-distance relationship since.
This development follows Keys' separation from his former wife, Julia, after 36 years of marriage when news of his relationship with Lucie Rose emerged in 2016. Julia Keys has publicly described how the affair devastated her during her recovery from thyroid cancer and profoundly impacted their family. The wedding was not attended by Keys' son Joshua or his daughter Jemma, who was previously one of Lucie Rose's closest friends before the romantic involvement began.
Legacy of Controversy and Career Turmoil
Keys and Gray, now 70, relocated to Doha in 2013, two years after both lost their positions at Sky Sports amidst a significant sexism scandal. In January 2011, a series of sexist remarks made by the pair about female assistant referee Sian Massey were recorded and leaked while they believed their microphones were switched off. Gray was subsequently dismissed by Sky Sports after video footage surfaced showing him making inappropriate comments to colleague Charlotte Jackson. Keys resigned from his £500,000-per-year role shortly thereafter.
The controversy has continued to follow their careers. In 2022, Match of the Day presenter Gabby Logan's memoir, The First Half, accused the duo of making sexist comments about her pregnancy during a flight to the 2005 Champions League final. Keys threatened legal action in response, stating he had supported Logan early in her career and that he and Gray were "easy targets." Gray expressed disappointment, emphasising his focus on moving forward rather than dwelling on past allegations.
Family Fallout and Professional Impact
The personal ramifications have been severe. Julia Keys revealed that the affair contributed to their daughter Jemma's career struggles, including battles with alcoholism and depression. Jemma, an actress formerly on Hollyoaks, also faced legal proceedings over abusive text messages sent to Lucie Rose, though charges were eventually dropped by prosecutors.
beIN Sports Tenure and Future Prospects
During their tenure at beIN Sports, Keys and Gray have fronted Premier League and Champions League coverage broadcast across twenty-four countries in the Middle East and North Africa. They also presented for the network during the 2022 FIFA World Cup hosted in Qatar. Reports suggest that upon their return to the UK, the broadcasting pair may step away from live football presenting altogether, potentially marking the end of an era in sports media.
