Reese Witherspoon has reassured fans that her dad John is doing well after reports emerged that he had been taken to hospital. The actress, 50, addressed the worrying news on Friday after reports circulated about her 84-year-old father’s health.
Instagram Update
Taking to Instagram Stories, Reese confirmed that John is now safe and receiving care from medical professionals.
“Earlier today, several outlets reported that my dad was taken to the hospital,” Reese wrote. “I want to let everyone know that he is fine now. He is being taken care of by wonderful doctors and nurses. Thank you to everyone who reached out. It means the world to our family.”
Family Background
Reese is one of two children born to John and his wife Betty Witherspoon. She has also spoken openly in the past about her own experience of family life, having become a mum while still in her early twenties.
The Hollywood star welcomed her first child, daughter Ava, now 26, with her former husband Ryan Phillippe. The former couple also share son Deacon, 22. Reese later welcomed another son, Tennessee, 13, during her marriage to Jim Toth.
Reflections on Early Motherhood
Looking back on becoming a mother at 23 while building her acting career, Reese previously admitted she had little idea of how difficult it would be to juggle both. “There was so much I didn’t know,” she said on The New York Times’ “The Interview” podcast in September 2025, reflecting on how her lack of experience may have helped her take on the challenge without overthinking it.
“Maybe that naïveté was good because it’s like, ‘Oh, I’ll just do that and have a career.’ And I did have a few people say to me, ‘This is going to be really hard on your career.’”
She explained that becoming a young mum meant making difficult decisions around the roles she accepted, particularly as her career accelerated following the success of Legally Blonde. She continued at the time: “There were roles I couldn’t take. I had to have this immediate balance of family and career, being a mom and being a working actress. That’s why it was also scary when Legally Blonde became such a big hit. I wasn’t going to beg for parts; parts were coming to me. And that almost made it scarier, because I wasn’t picking and choosing what I would reach and strive for. It was more like, what will I not do?”
Recent Personal Milestones
Her approach to motherhood has evolved as Ava and Deacon have grown older, with Reese previously explaining that parenting adult children requires a different kind of relationship. This also comes after Reese went public with her boyfriend two years after they were first linked. The Hollywood actress, who was celebrating the prequel of her iconic 2001 comedy, Legally Blonde, Elle - which she produced - looked very loved up with German private equity financier, Oliver Haarmann, who rarely let go of the star's hand at the series' premiere in June.
In 2011, Reese married Hollywood agent Jim Toth after a whirlwind romance. She described herself as "very lucky" to find her "perfect fit" in a Marie Claire interview. Revealing she felt 'relieved' after marrying Jim, with whom she shares son, Tennessee, 13, she said: "Now I feel a great sense of relief and an incredible amount of support from my husband."
However, in 2023, Reese and Jim announced their decision to divorce, insisting they wanted to focus on their family's well-being during their separation. Explaining that their main focus was on their son, Reese took to Instagram, saying: "We have enjoyed so many wonderful years together and are moving forward with deep love, kindness and mutual respect for everything we have created together. Our biggest priority is our son and our entire family as we navigate this next chapter."
The Cruel Intentions star was first linked to financier, Oliver, nearly two years ago after they were spotted enjoying dinner together in New York in July 2024.
