Marcus Rashford has returned to Manchester United after Barcelona opted against making his loan move permanent, with the forward posting a farewell message on social media.
Farewell message
Rashford was out of favour at Manchester United 12 months ago after clashing with Ruben Amorim. Following a brief loan at Aston Villa, he secured a season-long move to Barcelona. The loan agreement included an option to make the move permanent for £26million, but Barcelona chose not to exercise it. Rashford had expressed his desire to stay at the La Liga side beyond this season.
During his spell, Rashford scored 14 times in 49 games, including a goal in an El Clasico win, as Barcelona retained the La Liga title. However, he was never a guaranteed starter due to competition from Lamine Yamal and Raphinha on the wings.
On Instagram, Rashford wrote: “I’m very grateful to everyone at the club for making my time here such a positive and memorable experience. I've enjoyed every moment and will take many special memories with me. I wish the club and all its supporters the very best of luck and every success in the season ahead. Visca el Barca”
Barriers to permanency
A permanent move became more challenging after Barcelona spent £70million on Anthony Gordon from Newcastle. Gordon plays out wide, suggesting the Catalans had other priorities despite Rashford being available for less. Their next target is Julian Alvarez, as they need to replace Robert Lewandowski, who was allowed to depart. Alvarez plays for rivals Atletico Madrid, who are determined not to sell, with any move likely to exceed £100million.
Return to Manchester United
Returning to Old Trafford, where Rashford has not played for over 18 months, is made easier by the fact that Amorim has been moved on. Michael Carrick is now in charge, presenting a new era for Rashford, though there has been no clear indication whether he will be reintroduced. Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha were crucial in United's third-place finish last season and are likely ahead of Rashford in the pecking order.
Since making his debut in 2016, Rashford has scored 138 times in 426 games for his boyhood club.
