Dutch rapper and music producer Tony Scott has died at the age of 54 after a lengthy struggle with multiple sclerosis (MS). His family confirmed the news, stating that he passed away peacefully on Thursday, August 6, surrounded by love.
Career and Legacy
Born Peter van den Bosch, Tony Scott was a pioneer of the Dutch hip-hop scene. Over his decade-long career, he released three albums: The Chief (1990), Expressions from the Soul (1991), and Chameleon (1993). He was best known for his jingle compositions, including a theme tune for the Amsterdam Admirals in 1996 and regular station idents for the Amsterdam Funk Channel.
Tony was diagnosed with MS in 2014 and staged a farewell gig at the Paradiso music venue in 2016.
Tributes
In the wake of his passing, heartfelt tributes have flooded in. The Amsterdam Funk Channel said: "54 is far too young." They added: "There were undoubtedly countless songs still to be written, rhymes to be spit, places to visit, conversations to have, and memories yet to be made. Tony leaves behind a musical legacy that will continue to inspire generations. For those fortunate enough to have known him personally, it is his kindness, generosity and authenticity that will be remembered most."
Dutch music producer The Packxsz, also known as Pax van de Vliet, shared: "A childhood hero. The Chief. A pioneer of the Dutch Hip-Hop scene and the undisputed king of Dutch Hip House and Swingbeat. One of the first artists from our little country to achieve success in the United States. It's a damn shame that so few documentaries and platforms give you the recognition you deserve."
