Queen Camilla appeared in the Royal Box at Wimbledon on Wednesday to watch British wildcard Arthur Fery take on world number 10 Flavio Cobolli in what was billed as the game of a lifetime for the 23-year-old. Fery, who grew up near the All-England Club, entered the match on a four-match winning streak that he admitted he "couldn't have imagined" before the tournament, calling his progress "a dream".
Royal Presence and Celebrity Guests
Camilla was joined in the 74-seat Royal Box by newlyweds Peter and Harriet Phillips, who married in Gloucestershire last month. Other notable attendees included Hollywood star Elle Fanning, actor Dominic West, survivalist Bear Grylls, and actress Emily Mortimer. Political figures Alistair Campbell and George Osborne were also present, alongside sports stars such as England cricketer Joe Root and 1996 Wimbledon champion Richard Krajicek.
Fery's Strong Start on Centre Court
Fery began the match strongly, scoring early points to cheers of "Come on Arthur!" from the crowd. He matched the power and tempo of his ATP Tour-winning opponent in the early stages, showing no signs of being overawed by the occasion. Temperatures reached 32°C, with spectators using umbrellas, handheld fans, and straw hats to keep cool.
Queen's Surprise Visit to Players' Area
Earlier on Wednesday, Camilla made a surprise visit to the players' area near Centre Court, wearing a turquoise chiffon dress by designer Anna Valentine. She met former British number one Heather Watson, who said the Queen was "super down-to-earth" and asked about her career. Watson admitted: "I started sweating profusely with nerves. She asked me about Wimbledon and my career." Watson also spoke with Camilla's sister Annabel Elliott, who said they had been coming to Wimbledon since they were very young.
Meeting with Ball Boys and Charity Chief
The Queen also spoke with ball boy Zebedee from Saint Cecilia's Church of England School and ball girl Aniya from The Tiffin's Girl School. Zebedee called the experience "very special", while Aniya said: "It was an amazing experience. I really enjoyed it. It's definitely an opportunity of a lifetime." Camilla also met Richard Gammage, chief executive of the food waste charity City Harvest, who said: "It was lovely to meet Her Majesty. We talked about what we do and how we do it, she was really interested in all of that." Gammage noted that Camilla remembered meeting him 15 years ago when she was involved with the Royal Air Force Station.
Longstanding Wimbledon Staff Honoured
Among those introduced to the Queen were Morag Ranford, who has worked in Wimbledon's press operations team for 50 years, and Pete Dobson, a safety officer at the tournament for 25 years. The royal box also included Zara and Mike Tindall, Geri and Christian Horner, and rugby legend Lewis Moody.
