Sam Thompson was seen getting emotional at the TRIC Awards on Tuesday night, hugging his best friend Pete Wicks after winning Best Podcast for the second year running. The pair, who host Staying Relevant, were celebrating their victory when Sam appeared tearful and red-faced.
Photographs captured Sam, 33, gesticulating wildly while speaking to Pete, 37, before wrapping him in a tight embrace and resting his head on his shoulder. A representative for Sam told The Mirror: “Sam and Pete were absolutely thrilled and very emotional to have won Best Podcast Award at the TRICS for the second year running. Staying Relevant is such a passion project for them so to receive such a special accolade twice felt all the more special. Happy tears were flowing from the whole team.”
During the ceremony, Sam accidentally swore while accepting the award, exclaiming: “That’s mad! Wahey! No! I just didn’t wanna say the word f***, oop!” He then clapped his hand over his mouth as Pete brushed it off, saying: “Don’t do that!” The duo shared a video on Instagram captioned: “SECOND YEAR IN A ROW BABY. Thank you Relevanters for every single vote, we wouldn’t be here without you.”
This is not the first time Sam has been photographed crying on Pete’s shoulder at the TRIC Awards. Last year, Sam later revealed on his podcast that he had received some bad news, explaining: “I was really sad, and Pete being my best mate, he took me outside… I let it all out. I’m literally head-butting Pete’s shoulder.” It remains unclear why Sam was emotional this year, though it may have been tears of joy.
