Paddy McGuinness has been confirmed as this year's celebrity who will switch on Blackpool Illuminations. The event returns on Friday, September 4, with thousands expected on the Lancashire coast to enjoy a free star-studded festival.
Strong Ties to Blackpool
Paddy, best known for hosting Take Me Out and Top Gear, has strong ties to the North and Blackpool. Over the years, he has appeared on stage at both the Winter Gardens and the Grand Theatre, filmed Top Gear in the seaside resort and passed through the town during his BBC Children in Need cycling challenge.
Speaking about the honour, he said: "I grew up visiting Blackpool on family holidays and driving through the Illuminations. I’m chuffed to be asked to switch on the lights and become part of the history of the town. I’ve performed in Blackpool plenty of times over the years and there’s always a fantastic atmosphere. I’m looking forward to joining the crowds for a belting night out."
Free Concert Line-up
The switch-on celebrations will feature a free live concert at the Tower Festival Headland, with performances from singer-songwriter Lucy Spraggan and rock band The Feeling, while British pop favourites Five will headline the evening.
This year's event is being delivered through a partnership between Blackpool Tourism Limited and the BBC. BBC Radio Lancashire presenters Graham Liver and Sharon Hartley will host the evening, while BBC Introducing will shine a spotlight on some of Lancashire's most promising emerging artists.
Graham said: "We’re thrilled to be hosting the iconic Blackpool Illuminations Switch-On. This partnership gives us the opportunity to showcase the very best of the BBC as well as some great local talent. The team at Blackpool Tourism really know how to put on a good show and we’re delighted to be a part of it!"
Ticket Ballot Details
Although the switch-on event is free to attend, tickets must be secured through a public ballot. Applications are now open, with tickets split equally between Blackpool residents and visitors. The ballot closes at 11pm on Sunday, August 9.
Successful applicants will need to pay a £5 administration fee per booking. Those wanting guaranteed access can instead buy a Golden Circle ticket, priced at £12, plus the same £5 booking fee.
