Paddy McGuinness issues awkward plea after live on-air slip-up

Paddy McGuinness issued an awkward plea as he tried to recover from a red-faced moment live on air. His mortifying moment came as he read out a message from a fan about the everyday items we tend to "overbuy".

Fan message sparks awkward moment

During the segment, a caller named Debbie confessed she can't resist buying "jugs, chopping boards and frying pans". Speaking on his BBC Radio 2 show on 16 August, Paddy said he could relate to one item in particular.

He went on to describe a shopping trip he'd recently taken for bedding and salt-and-pepper grinders. But he couldn't resist picking up a Pyrex jug, admitting that he's drawn to "little glass shiny things".

Paddy's magpie confession

And when it comes to jugs in general, Paddy suggested he's a bit of a "magpie", unfortunately for him. Initially, he read out the message: "Jugs, chopping boards and frying pans. I cannot stop buying them, Paddy. I'm drawn to them, and I live on my own. I can't help it. I'm addicted."

Paddy weighed in: "I get it with the jugs. You know when I went buying the bedding and the salt and pepper grinders the other day? I picked up a Pyrex jug while I was there, and I'm the same. There's something about those little glass shiny things. I'm like a magpie when it comes to jugs."

Recovery plea and silence

Laughter could then be heard in the studio as Paddy realised his mistake. He declared "Oh, God." A brief, awkward silence followed, punctuated by muffled laughter. Paddy appeared to acknowledge the less radio-friendly meaning of the word "jugs", adding: "I do apologise. That… please… that is not how I…," before quickly declaring, "Moving on…"

Upcoming Celebrity MasterChef role

It comes as Paddy McGuinness joins Angry Ginge for a surprise role on the new series of Celebrity MasterChef. The show synopsis read: "The red carpet rolls into the MasterChef kitchen for a glittering line-up of celebrities from the worlds of music, drama, comedy, sport and showbiz. This 21st series warmly welcomes singers and sports stars, actors and authors, to comedians, entertainers and presenters, all with the aim of cooking their way to becoming Celebrity MasterChef 2026 Champion."

"Five weeks of extraordinary challenges await in a competition that will push the celebrities beyond the comfort of their showbiz jobs. Acting the part won't cut the mustard and singing for your supper will not equal success. The only thing guaranteed is that just one of them will be left standing at the end, where their sparkling career will lead them to the shiny prize - the iconic Celebrity MasterChef trophy."

It was also revealed that Take Me Out favourite Paddy, I'm A Celebrity winner Angry Ginge, and Radio 2's Zoe Ball would serve as Celebrity Guest Judges. Catch Paddy on Celebrity MasterChef on BBC One tonight (August 19), from 9pm to 10pm.
