The new Oasis documentary, Don't Look Back In Anger, reveals that Noel Gallagher was "astonished and surprised" by how good his brother Liam sounded during the band's reunion tour rehearsals.
The film, premiering this weekend in Venice, features footage from the band's first rehearsals for the 2025 tour, marking the first time Oasis allowed a live rehearsal to be filmed.
Rehearsals captured on film
Film creator Steven Knight said: "Noel said he [Liam] sounded better than he ever sounded, and everyone was, honestly, quite astonished."
Knight added that the brothers were surprised by the generational reach of their music. "What they didn't expect was that their kids and grandkids would discover the same music. In fact, at many of the concerts, the majority of the people in attendance were not the original generation of people who discovered the band."
Twelve remote cameras were set up in rehearsals at The Mill in south west London so the band could rehearse alone. Directors admitted that until the brothers held hands coming on stage for the first show in Cardiff, it was not obvious they had completely patched things up.
Cardiff comeback
Director Dylan Southern said: "What they captured was a band who take rehearsing very seriously, and as the rehearsals drew to a close the band were sounding incredible, but we were still a little uncertain about how things were on a personal level for the brothers."
Southern added: "The most memorable part of the shoot was definitely the first show in Cardiff, because it was the first, and nobody, not even the band, knew what was going to happen. Nothing prepared us for just how visceral the explosion of joy and love would be. It was off the scale."
The documentary spans 12 Oasis concerts over three continents, with a large chunk focused on the comeback show in Cardiff on July 4, 2025.
2027 tour hints
Noel has given cryptic confirmation for a 2027 tour, telling TalkSport's Andy Goldstein: "Oh well, then there must be something happening. There must be something happening." He added: "Well, let's put it this way: there's no football tournament on next year, so we've got to do summer in the summer, right?"
Sources have confirmed to the Mirror that dates will be announced for Oasis to play Manchester City's Etihad stadium in June 2027 before returning to Knebworth later in the year, likely in September. The promoter of the 2025 reunion tour has already secured a licence to host events at Knebworth.
The reunion tour was announced in August 2024, 15 years after the band's split in 2009, prompted by a backstage brawl between the brothers at the Rock en Seine festival in France. Oasis: Don't Look Back In Anger opens in IMAX and UK cinemas on September 9 and will stream on Disney+ later in the year.
