A video of Keith Urban candidly discussing his addiction struggles and the early days of his marriage to Nicole Kidman has resurfaced following reports that the couple have ended their 19-year marriage. The Oscar-winning actress, 58, and the country singer, 57, are said to have grown apart due to busy filming and touring schedules.
In the video, recorded at the AFI Life Achievement Award Gala Tribute in June 2024, Urban said: 'We got married in 2006, and barely four months into our marriage, the addictions that I had done really nothing about blew our marriage to smithereens. Four months into a marriage, and I’m in rehab for three months with no idea what was going to happen to us.'
Urban credited Kidman for helping him through that difficult period, adding: 'Nic pushed through every negative voice. I’m sure even some of her own, and she chose love. And here we are tonight 18 years later. Her capacity to love is like no one I’ve ever met.' Kidman was visibly moved during the speech.
The singer has previously spoken about his battle with drugs and alcohol. In 2016, he told Rolling Stone: 'I was very, very blessed to have Nic call an intervention on me. My reckless behaviour caused the implosion of my fresh marriage.' He later described the intervention, staged with Oprah Winfrey, as transformative.
Reports suggest the couple have spent increasing time apart due to professional commitments. A source told TMZ: 'Keith never sees Nicole, either she is filming or he is on tour. There was a lot of love between the two and they might not divorce, but there is a world that they both live where neither of them are in it.' The insider added that Kidman has been 'holding the family together through this difficult time' since Urban moved out.
The couple, who share daughters Sunday Rose, 17, and Faith Margaret, 14, married in 2006 after meeting the year before at the G'Day USA Gala. Shortly after marrying, Urban entered the Betty Ford Center for alcohol addiction treatment.
