Nicholas Hoult is set to star as Gilderoy Lockhart in the second season of HBO's Harry Potter series, according to Variety sources. The 36-year-old actor, known for his roles in Skins and Mad Max: Fury Road, will take on the role of the deceitful Defence Against the Dark Arts professor, whose tales of bravery are exposed as lies.
Role in the Series
Lockhart's character puts Harry Potter, played by Dominic McLaughlin, in danger due to his cowardly nature. In the second book by JK Rowling, Ron Weasley's sister Ginny is possessed by Tom Riddle's diary and nearly dies in the Chamber of Secrets. Kenneth Branagh originally played Lockhart in the film series.
Hoult is no stranger to major franchises, currently playing Lex Luthor in James Gunn's Superman and previously appearing as Hank/Beast in the X-Men movies.
Casting Updates
There is no word yet on who will play Ginny, who becomes Harry's love interest. Gracie Cochrane, who played the character in season one, stepped down, prompting a new search. Fans are also awaiting the casting of Tom Riddle, with many hoping for Adolescence actor Owen Cooper.
The first season will premiere this Christmas with eight episodes.
Controversy and Backlash
The series has faced backlash due to Rowling's controversial stance on transgender issues. Actors associated with the project have been questioned on their views. Bel Powley, who plays Aunt Petunia, told the Telegraph she 'strongly disagrees with Rowling's views on gender' but loves Harry Potter. Paapa Essiedu and John Lithgow have also distanced themselves from Rowling's views.
