True crime fans are feeling "chills" after watching Netflix's latest offering about a mysterious death, raising more questions than answers.
Netflix's latest documentary, perfect for true crime fans, features never-before-seen footage and first-hand accounts from the friends and family of a woman called Mica Miller. Mica's body was found at a North Carolina state park on April 27, 2024, and her death was promptly ruled a suicide.
A Case That Hit National Headlines
The case hit national headlines after Mica claimed to be the victim of a stalking plot, with her husband, John-Paul Miller, at the heart of the claims. The three-part Netflix series details the events leading up to Mica's sudden death, and it features heartbreaking accounts from those closest to her.
“Although we never met Mica, the time we spent with her family and friends allowed us to feel her warmth and heart as a human who endured unspeakable pain,” executive producer Alana Goldstein told Tudum.
Mica's Life and Relationship
Mica was a worship leader who grew up singing in the church, and when she was 13, she met John-Paul Miller, the pastor of Solid Rock Church. Across the three episodes, Death of a Pastor's Wife traces their relationship through text messages, home video, church footage, and Mica's own journals.
Netflix shared the official trailer on X, formerly Twitter, which features audio of a 911 call, where Mica's voice is heard saying: "I just want my family to know where to find me." The trailer goes on to explain how Mica was 16 when she made the church her life, and how she first came to meet John-Paul.
"They look like the ultimate couple. This is what I want my marriage to look like," her friends are heard saying. They claimed Mica was influenced by John-Paul because he was 15 years her senior. "She just listened to his voice, a voice of a pastor, a voice of a mentor, and then a voice of a husband."
Viewer Reactions and Family Focus
But their relationship "spiralled" from there, the trailer claims. Viewers took to the comments to share their thoughts on the post, which featured the words from the 911 call, with one saying: "That line alone gives chills. This looks intense!" "I'm not a huge true crime person, but I've been waiting for this one," another viewer added.
The docuseries includes accounts from people who were closest to Mica, and at its heart are her siblings and sister-in-law. They were joined by close friends of Mica's and former members of Solid Rock Church.
Choosing to focus on Mica's immediate family was a deliberate choice by the filmmakers. "So many people actually sat that didn't make the final cut," Goldstein said.
“Ultimately, we collectively decided that the siblings were the right vehicle to tell her story. A lot of people wanted to speak on Mica's behalf, which speaks to what a big community she had and what a bright light she was to so many people.”
Netflix's official synopsis for the series says: "What happened to Mica Miller? This documentary series retraces her promising life, toxic marriage and the mysterious circumstances of her death."
The final episode explores how, "with hope on the horizon, Mica's life ends in a sudden, mysterious tragedy. Systemic failures come to light as her family's fight for truth unfolds".
Death of a Pastor's Wife is on Netflix.
