Murder Case returns: BBC Scotland series probes three Scottish killings

BBC Scotland has confirmed new episodes of its award-winning crime documentary series Murder Case, with three horrifying cases set to be examined. The new instalments, made by Firecrest Films, will be released later this year and in early 2027, covering murders, disappearances, affairs, and cold cases reopened decades later.

The upcoming series will feature interviews with families of the victims, the media who covered the cases at the time, and the police who finally delivered justice. Four unsettling episodes will delve into the devastating details of the three cases, which took place in Scotland over the years.

Top crime documentary of 2026

Murder Case reportedly remains the top crime documentary of 2026 to date for BBC Scotland. Driven by the cases of The Vanishing Cyclist and The Hunt for Arlene Fraser's Killer, the series brought in 5.8 million viewing requests from across the UK.

The new series will look into the murder of 23-year-old Cameron Logan on New Year's Day in 2017, and the disappearance of bookkeeper Suzanne Pilley in 2010. The final episode will be dedicated to the cold case of Marion Hodge decades after her disappearance in 1984.

Exceptional access to Police Scotland

David Harron, commissioning editor for documentaries and specialist factual at BBC Scotland, said: "Murder Case remains one of our most important and popular brands and this new collection of stories keeps the standard as high as ever."

"With exceptional access to the Major Investigations Team of Police Scotland plus family and friends of the victims it offers the audience real insight into how these murder investigations are conducted. And, as always, the often-heartbreaking stories are told sensitively and with great care and consideration."

While release dates for the episodes have yet to be confirmed, true crime fans can watch previous episodes of Murder Case on BBC iPlayer.

Cameron Logan: 'Fire in Suburbia'

Spanning two hour-long episodes, the case of Cameron Logan will be examined. In the early hours of New Year's Day 2017, the 23-year-old was set alight and murdered in his family home in Milngavie, East Dunbartonshire.

The crime is recalled through the eyes of Cameron's girlfriend, Rebecca Williams, who was 25-years-old at the time. While Rebecca survived the attack, she was left critically ill in hospital as the police tried to track down the arsonist and the mysterious car discovered nearby. As worry spreads across the small community and pressure from the media heightens, the police are left wondering if the answers behind the crime lie closer to home.

Suzanne Pilley: 'A Fatal Affair'

After bookkeeper Suzanne Pilley disappears suddenly while at work in Edinburgh, an investigation is launched into how she was seen entering the building but never making it to her desk. While heartbroken colleagues assist the police in 2010 by searching through her emails, it is uncovered that Suzanne had been having an affair with colleague David Gilroy, who was a married man.

A nationwide search then unfolds after specialist dogs find evidence in the office basement. The 60 minute episode follows the forensic police investigation as breadcrumbs take the case all the way to the remote forests of Argyll.

Marion Hodge: 'The Day My Mother Vanished'

A cold case spanning over 40 years is examined for the final Murder Case episode. On July 5, 1984, 34-year-old Marion Hodge was seen alive for the last time. While her husband William Hodge claims she ran away, police become exceedingly suspicious that there is more going on with the case.

However, the case is not touched again until 2023, when a lifetime of lies and betrayal are finally uncovered through modern-day policing. The episode features Marion's sisters and daughter Kathy, as well as intrepid investigators, as they recall the agonising journey to find out what really happened to the Lockerbie mum.
