Disney Fans Realise Moana's Name Meaning as Live-Action Film Releases
Moana Name Meaning Revealed as Live-Action Film Hits Cinemas

Disney's live-action adaptation of Moana hits cinemas on Friday, 10 July 2026, and fans of the franchise are only just realising what the titular character's name actually means.

What Does Moana's Name Mean?

In a post shared on Reddit, one Disney fan expressed being "mind blown" upon learning that Moana's name translates to "ocean" in Hawaiian. The fan noted the irony: "How did her parents not see all of that coming after naming her that?! Or, why did they name her that, considering all of the hardships her father went through and THEN ban her from being with her namesake?" The post garnered limited comments, with one user pointing out that the characters in Moana are Polynesian, not specifically Hawaiian, though another replied that the languages "probably have some overlap."

Story Significance

Moana tells the story of a young girl chosen by the ocean to return the heart of the goddess Te Fiti, stolen by the demigod Maui 1,000 years prior. Her parents, Chief Tui and Sina, try to keep her away from the ocean to prepare her for leadership, but when blight strikes the island, Moana ventures beyond the reef to save her people.
